Learn the basics then practice the basics!

If you are serious about learning there is one thing that you need to do. You need to commit to practice time. Not everyone can take time out of their busy day to stop and practice guitar. But without a regular practice routine, your skills development will suffer. In addition you will probably loose interest.

Having said that, you do not need to practice for hours. In fact ten minutes a day is better than an hour session once a week. That small amount of time practicing will help with your muscle memory much better than one session per week. If you can’t do that every day then try to find fifteen minutes every other day or three days per week.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you can practice some things without a guitar in your hand. Some things such as holding a pick you can do anywhere. Keep a pick in your pocket and practice holding it. It took me close to six months to get use to having a pick between my fingers. You can practice strumming and timing without a guitar. You can do this anywhere while you are listening music. Practice strumming along to songs. Even though it’s not the same as strumming a guitar, it is still practice of a skill.

The bottom line is, you need to practice and commit to it. If you do you will learn faster and realize whatever goals you set for yourself faster. Remember practice does not make perfect, it makes permanent!
